What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved.

The implants are titanium posts which are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for porcelain teeth. In addition, dental implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration (and bone loss) which occurs when teeth are missing.

When teeth are congenitally missing, implants may be the perfect solution:

Evaluation for Dental Implants

If implant dentistry is the choice for you, then you will undergo a dental/radiographic and health history examination. During these consultation visits, your specific needs and considerations will be addressed by either Dr. Lopez-Belio, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, or a Periodontist.

What is Involved in Dental Implant Procedure?

Dental implants are metal anchors, which act as tooth root substitutes. They are surgically placed into the jawbone.

After the implant has bonded to the jawbone (integrated into the bone), Dr. Lopez-Belio will remove the screw at the surface of the gum so that impressions can be taken for a crown, a bridge or dentures.

Typically, patients that have lost one or two teeth, have porcelain crowns placed over a custom abutment which is then all placed over the implant.

For example, the patient below was missing a tooth so an implant was placed and then a porcelain crown was placed over it:

 A DENTAL IMPLANT STORY:

Patient comes in to the office with trauma to the face from an accident. A front tooth has suffered a fracture on its root which requires that the tooth be pulled.  An implant is inserted. The patient’s own tooth is used as a temporary crown so that the patient can leave the office with a tooth while the implant area heals properly.

The bottom picture shows the patient’s own tooth being used as a temporary, hence a little blood at first. The X-ray shows the implant placed in the gum.

Same patient as above, and once again we see the progression of treatment. Only now, look at the bottom two pictures. The gum has healed properly and the new crown is placed over the custom abutment, which is then all placed over the implant !
